Getting married during Covid-19

Dapper couple Blair & David tied the knot last month at the beautiful Iscoyd Park in Wrexham. For this blog post I got the lowdown on getting married during lockdown...

Congratulations Mr & Mrs Elliott! Tell me a bit about you both?

We met 12 years ago but have been together for 8 years and had been engaged for 2 years before getting married. Dave proposed on a beach in Thailand in 2018 at sunset, it was super romantic and he'd planned everything to the smallest detail. I almost ruined the whole thing by saying I didn't fancy going for a walk on the beach! Fortunately, he convinced me!

How did you come to the decision to have a micro wedding instead of postponing the day?

A mixture of the uncertainty of not knowing whether numbers/guidance would change in 2021 and the fact that we had spent 2 years planning. The importance of being married was our main priority and we felt lucky we were able to go ahead at our chosen venue with our closest family and friends.

How did your wedding suppliers and venue help you throughout the decision-making process?

Our venue were absolutely amazing throughout the whole process, they were so understanding and did everything they could to try and limit the amount of stress we were under, we couldn't have asked for a better team.

How did you inform your guests? And how did you family and friends react?

It was difficult to make decisions on cutting down our list to begin with so we first spoke to all our guests and asked if there was anyone who felt they wouldn’t be able to attend due to travel restrictions or health reasons. We felt extremely fortunate that all our guests were so understanding and so we decided to keep it to close family and friends.

Was there any effect on your overall wedding budget?

We spent less than our original budget but with the added bonus that we were able to add in extras such as canapes which we had previously taken out due to our budget, so it was great to be able to add back in those small little extra touches to make the day even more special.
What extra measures did you have to put in place on the day?
All guests wore masks during the ceremony and so did Dave and I up until we said our vows. Social distancing was maintained throughout. Wearing a mask didn't impede too much on our day, just meant I had to reapply my lipstick!
What was your favourite moment of the day?
I don't think we could pick just one moment as the whole day was just a dream, however we do feel very lucky to have also had a double rainbow which our photographer made sure we got plenty of shots of.
What were the positives of having a micro-wedding?
It was easier to get round to actually having proper conversations with all of our guests, the whole day just felt more special and intimate and given the circumstances we felt fortunate to be able to go ahead and get married.
When you can go on your honeymoon – where are you going?
We are yet to plan our honeymoon, we will look in the new year when we feel things will be a little clearer on what we are able to do and where we are able to go, although we did have a lovely couple of days in Surrey following the wedding as a minimoon.
Are you still planning a bigger celebration?
Possibly, I think we are just going to see next year, but it would be nice to do something at some point but of course will depend on what's possible with any future restrictions.
What has been the best piece of advice you’ve received that has helped you?
To focus on the fact that it was our day and it was about us as a couple and not to lose sight of that
.
And finally, what piece of advice would you give to other couples?

Just do it! It will be better than you think and will still be the happiest day of your life. This year has taught us both what is important and for us being able to share that with our very closest family and friends was epic. I think because of the reduced guestlist the people that were there were so happy to be able to be there and share it with us, the love in the room was palpable!

There will be plenty of opportunities for a big party in the future and you can’t put your life on hold forever!
